Students Recognized for Helping Serve Others in Safety Patrol Franklin fifth grade Byron Parker received the Bill Palmer Award for the Optimists Clubs 26th annual Respect for Law and Safety Patrol ceremony. That award recognized the best patrol member in the city. Also at Franklin elementary, Amber Fallet was recognized for her efforts in safety patrol. Along with the Franklin students the Optimist Club honored elementary students Bailey Peabody and Nolan Peters of Bloomer, Heaven Vela and Aubreianna Flanagan of Carter Lake, Dylan Reimer and Karson Sachs of Crescent, Cody Knauss and Christian Castaneda of Edison, Logan Kline and Caleb Larsen of Lewis and Clark, Emmalee Keller and Zander Carda of Longfellow, Emily Eikenberry and D’Mitre Hedrick of Roosevelt, Adrian Hernandez and Kaitlin Cedar of Rue and Grant Merk of Walnut Grove. 28 Council Bluffs Students Qualify for National History Day Competition; Students Advance to Nationals Sam Hulett and Ben Price qualified for the National History Day with their Junior Group Documentary. They received their awards from Iowa Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds and Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs Director Mary Cownie. Schools from Underwood, Council Bluffs Kirn, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, Saint Albert, Harlan, and Clarinda had students prepare projects for the competition. National History Day inspires children through exciting competitions and transforms teaching through project based curriculum and instruction. The state-level competition for the high school students will be April 29th and for the middle school students on May 6th, both in Des Moines. Thomas Jefferson Winter Guard and Percussion Take 1st Place The Thomas Jefferson Winter Guard notched it's first victory ever finishing in 1st place at the most recent Heartland Winter Arts Association (HWAA) circuit held at Omaha Burke High School.
Abraham Lincoln Speech Team Has Stellar Season Abraham Lincoln High School completed a terrific speech season this last weekend. AL had 35 students participate in the district contest held at ALHS on February 23rd. AL advanced 28 of those 35 to the state level of competition held last weekend, March 9, at Nevada High School in Nevada, IA. 20 of the 28 students earned division one ratings and 8 others earned a slightly lower rating, but still did a great job. Those participating this year included: Holly Vanderpool, Andrew Meyers, Noah Larsen, Fransico Franco, Aurora Owens, Derek Gilman, Destany Mass, Natalie Carlon, Hannah Goldapp, Megan Reif, Tristin Barnhart, Taylora Christensen, Becca Barker, Isabella Taylor, Seamus St. Clair, Hope Philbrick, Josh Hannan, Olivia Welch, Ben Addison, Collin Smith, Paige Oamek, Nolan Dresher, Dillion Gibson and Abby Otten. In addition, EIGHT performances from Abraham Lincoln High School earned All-Sate Honors. This is the highest level a student can reach in Iowa High School Speech. Congratulations to all! Youth Art Month Winner Walnut Grove 1st Grader Madeline Tierney
Walnut Grove 1st Grader, Madeline Tierney, took 1st place in the Joslyn Art Museum Association’s (JAMA) Youth Art Month Contest. Her piece of art will be displayed on a billboard on 30th and Broadway for the rest of the month. Third grader, Jordan Kreft, also a Walnut Grove student, took 4th place in the contest. All 175 contest entries will be featured in a display at the Council Bluffs Public Library, March 4-March 31. Joslyn Art Museum Studio Programs Manager judged the entries and the contest was facilitated by JAMA members Cathy Born and Judy Boelts. Congratulations to all that participated! On Saturday, February 23, 2013 The Thomas Jefferson Indoor Drumline captured 1st Place at the Heartland Winter Arts Association show at Bellevue West High School in Bellevue NE. The TJ Indoor Drumline is only in it's seventh year of existence with this year's show entitled Paradise Lost.
Abraham Lincoln Crimson and Blue 2012 Yearbook Earns Prestigious "Neubert Award" from the Iowa High School Press Association Congratulations to the 2012 Crimson and Blue staff at Abraham Lincoln High School for being one of six school yearbooks in the state to win the Neubert Award from the Iowa High School Press Association. This is the highest award given and is described by the Association as "prestigious."
The IWCC Arts Center Presents Working Group Theatre and Mayberry: A Project to Encourage Community Dialogue On February 20th, the Arts Center at Iowa Western Community College will host the Working Group Theatre to conduct two workshops at Thomas Jefferson High School. The workshops, entitled Theater for the Oppressed, will use a technique known as Theater Forum to discuss bullying and promote acceptance and inclusion. The Working Group Theatre will present a full-length dramatic performance of the original work “Mayberry” on Thursday, February 21st, at the Arts Center. Abraham Lincoln Speech Team Has Stellar Season, Makes it to State Congratulations to the ALHS speech team for a great large group season! AL took 10 events to district contest on January 19th and advanced 9 of the 10 to state competition. State competition was held last weekend in Waukee and AL earned one division two rating and seven division one ratings. A great job by all! Finally, three groups advanced to All-State which is the highest level an IHSSA student can earn. Those that advanced to All-State are: Group improvisation: Derek Gilman, Aurora Owens and Josh Hannan Musical theater: Seamus St.Clair, Taylora Christensen and Isabella Taylor Radio Broadcasting 9th grade team: Nolan Dresher, Logan Erwin, Ben Addison, Abby Otten, Caitlyn Hayslip and DiaMonte Hill. Middle School Swimming Starts February 12th - The swim team is open to all boys and girls, grades 6th though 8th, from Wilson, Kirn and St. Albert middle schools. Bus transportation will be provided for interested Wilson students. Practice will be Tuesdays through Fridays immediately after school until 4:45. Swim meets will include a home meet at Kirn and the city championship meet at Lewis Central at the end of the season on March 23rd. Andrew Hanson, son of Lisa Wingate and Matthew Hanson, signed his Music Scholarship acceptance letter to sing while double majoring in Mathematics and Vocal Music Performance at the University of Northern Iowa. Corry Valeika, son of Susanne & Matt Helms and Christopher Valeika, signed his Music Scholarship acceptance letter to play cello while double majoring in Science and Education at the University of Northern Iowa. Patrick O’Brien, son of Jack and Kim O’Brien, signed his Music Scholarship acceptance letter to play bassoon while majoring in Music Performance and Linguistics at the University of Iowa. Fifth Graders Get Future Focused at All-City Career Fair Sponsored by the Council Bluffs Rotary Clubs More than 1,000 fifth graders from across Council Bluffs participated in the Fifth Grade "Future Focus" Career Fair, sponsored by Rotary Clubs of Council Bluffs and featuring 35 career speakers in interactive sessions for these members of the Class of 2020!
District and Community Receive National Pacesetter Award for Outstanding Summer Exploration Program Summer Exploration Program partners gathered on April 24th to be part of the National Pacesetter Award Presentation. Ralph Smith, Senior Vice President for the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Managing Director of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, addressed the audience of partners about the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities for students. The month-long summer program is in its fourth year and was cited for the positive affect on student literacy and its involvement of the greater community and dedicated partners working together on behalf of students. Bloomer Student Wins Money Smart Week Poster Content Bloomer fifth grader Clare Plummer won the local Money Smart Week poster contest sponsored by TS Bank. Her poster will be entered into the state-level contest. Edison Staff and School Community Raise $1,000 for Scholarship Staff members at Edison Elementary purchased and donated a variety of items within themed baskets to fund our scholarship program. Edison students and families then purchased raffle tickets as chance to win these themed baskets. As a result of the generosity of Edison staff members and Edison families, $1,000 was raised for the Edison scholarship program to fund two scholarships for Thomas Jefferson students to attend the college of their choice. Autism Walk Raises Awareness and Funds
The Council Bluffs Autism Support Group hosted the Council Bluffs Community Autism Walk on April 20th at Rue Elementary. About $2,500 will go to support school programs for children with autism in the Council Bluffs and Lewis Central School Districts and The Autism Society of Iowa.
Kirn Students Earn Honors at Optimist Speech Contest Kirn 8th graders Emma Seilstad, Andrea Millstead, Brooke Harold, Calab Holder, and Jacob Kaufman participated in the City Optimist Club Speech Contest. This year's topic was "Why My Voice is Important." With a fourth-place finish by Jacob and a second-place finish by Calab, they both competed at the zone level. Calab then placed second and earned the honors to compete at the regional level on April 27th. Good Luck, Calab! Kirn Middle School Student Wins Gold Key in Scholastic Writing Competition The following Kirn 8th grade students won awards for the Scholastic Writing Competition: Calab Holder: Gold Key in poetry, which qualified him to participate in the National Scholastic Writing Competition. Wilson Middle School students took home an Award of Distinction and a $250 check at the Student Mentoring Program Competition and Awards, sponsored by the Society of American Military Engineers, Omaha Post, and the Peter Kiewit Institute. Wilson students presented a Project Synergy Center, which would involve a Council Bluffs Regional Indoor Sports and Recreational Facility built to promote health, unify community, offer connectivity, and acknowledge participation and competition for all ages in the the city and rural areas. Carly will be studying Speech Pathology. Both have received various academic and athletic scholarships from the colleges. Congratulations and best wishes in their final season and continued playing at the next level! Community Resource Fair Success! More than 1,050 children and parents attended the March 28th Community Resource Fair sponsored by the Council Bluffs Community School District, with financial support from Promise Partners. More than 80 agencies and dozens of volunteers made it possible to bring schools, families and the community together at this annual event.

HOSA Students Receive High Marks at State Competition
The Tucker Center HOSA Chapter traveled to Des Moines, March 17 - 19, 2013 to compete at the HOSA State Competitions. Those placing in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place are eligible to compete at HOSA National Leadership Competition this June in Nashville, Tennessee. 2nd Place for Largest Increase in the State Fourth Graders to Perform with Symphony at the Holland Center Hundreds of fourth graders from Council Bluffs will be participating in "The Orchestra Sings!" program at the Holland Performing Arts Center in Omaha on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 9:45 and 11:15. Students from Edison, Walnut Grove, Bloomer, Roosevelt, College View and Hoover will be partnered with the Omaha symphony and Carnegie Hall to discover melody through work on the soprano recorder and voice. The program "Link Up" is a supplementary curriculum that culminates with these students performing live with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra. The program is funded by a Community Education Foundation classroom grant, school booster clubs and the Council Bluffs Symphony Guild. Edison Elementary student Kaitlynn Callabro will sit with the orchestra on stage and perform with them throughout the concert. Parents may invited to attend the concert for the $5 admission fee.
Jazz & Show Choir Place at IWCC Competition
Both the Thomas Jefferson show choir and jazz choir did exceptionally well at the 4A division at the Iowa Western Community College Jazz Choir Competition this past Saturday, March 9th. Jazz Choir received 1st place in the 4A division and received all Superior (1) ratings from all the judges. Kirn Middle School Physical Education teacher Debra Stephenson has earned the Central District Honor Award from the Central District Association for American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), for her outstanding service. A recommendation letter written about Debra stated “Debra has contributed many hours of her professional and personal time to further the organization's mission of “providing, supporting and promoting programs that encourage healthy, active lifestyles.” Candidates were chosen based on high moral character and personal integrity, contributions through the association, and outstanding service as a teacher. Twelve earned first through third place to earn a spot in the national competition April 23-29 in Anaheim, CA. There were about 400 Iowa students at the conference.
